SOOOOO..... this was a rare and very lucky permission visit, many many thanks to TOM (truebritishmetal 28dl) and his friend Tom (non forum) for asking me along!! Been wanting to go in here ever since i was a little girl!!! The estate manager has asked that we do not post pictures along with the manors proper name on t'internet because the future of the manor has been in debate for a few years now (hence why i have put it as manor CE) ..... but to be honest it wouldn't take you too long to figure out where it is should you so wish!!

A Little history, the Manor as it stands now dates back to about 1815, it was owned by the Harrington family from 1829, The estate remained under the ownership of the Harringtons for the remainder of the 19th century and for much of the 20th. During the war, the house was taken over by young women and turned into a teacher training college after the original college in Derby was evacuated for safety. The college vacated the house in 1947 and it remained mostly empty for the next two decades. With the house in a state of neglect and the grounds mostly unkempt and overgrown, the estate was finally put up for sale by the Harringtons in 1966. Derbyshire County Council and the then Derby County Borough Council were the joint purchasers. They set about a restoration project which brought much of the grounds back to beauty (although sadly, some were beyond restoration back to their full former glory) and the estate opened to the public as a Country Park, the first of its kind in England, on Good Friday, 1970.

it has since been used as a working museum in the 1980's, until the footfall began to take its toll and by the late 1990's it had fallen into disrepair and was closed to the public. Various bids have been made to turn it into a wedding venue, hotel, golf course etc etc and all have been turned down. its future still remains uncertain

Got to say! the pictures arent my best, it was a whistlestop tour, the estate manager gave up her own time to show us round and was lovely, also, i am dying from the flu!!! but all in all a good afternoon!!

Here is a few pics!!!

got to say it is worth a littel look round if your in the area, and they seem pretty open to visits at the moment if you can feign a project, photosociety, interest in heritage etc etc, so i have the details if anyone wants to try!!!
