In the stunning little village of Lower Bradfield, just a walk away from Sheffield, is an abandoned water filtration site sat at the side of the road, brambles and grass winning the battle and obtaining a foothold aiding in the unpretentiousness appearance of this old building.
Surrounded by unwelcoming security fencing the old school looking building hides an impressive interior.
The water works was built in 1913 to filter and treat water taken from the Dale Dike (the cause of the 1864 great flood of Sheffield),and Agden reservoirs in the nearby Loxley Valley. The water works was cutting edge technology in it's time and it even had the first telephone to be installed in Bradfield back in 1930 apparently.
In 1974 the Yorkshire Water Authority took over and then during the Thatcher government some years later, the entire UK water industry was privatised with the Water Act of 1989. The pumping house at Lower Bradfield was abandoned in 1994 when a new pump house and processing plant was built Further down the Loxley valley.
According to the locals the building attracts unwanted visitors and is a constant eyesore and a morbid reminder of Lower Bradfields grim past.
Inside the Filtration works just about everything has been stripped, been taken...or destroyed. Although still this site will not disappoint, the building has a charm that is appealing and will linger in my memory for a time to come. One of the most impressive features of this building is the main filtration hall what once would have housed 2 or 4 massive pump machines, evident by the now sand filled pits present there, but this massive hall has become a gallery of local artists Fauna Graphic, Rocket01 and Numero Uno amongst many more that I am not so wise of, It is known as the "Hall of Graffiti".
