Well my time in Berlin is nearly up so I had today pencilled in for hitting what sites I could. Then it decided to snow and expecting a typical "English" reaction of everything grinding to a halt, thankfully here in Berlin 3 inches of snow in 45 minutes is dealt with as if it was the norm. In my case 3 inches of snow was to cause me a far bigger issue late on in our explore.
Our target for the day was a rail depot of some description an hour and a half North of Berlin, to while away the time travelling we played spot the derelict..."there's one", "there's another" this city is the city that won't stop giving.
The site itself is almost untouched, it had been well sealed and being well off the beaten track the local "Artistes" have yet to find it. Wandering around in heavy snow, 3 inches of it on the floor made for a relaxing day right up to the last but one building...looking around for something to stand on my right foot sank into the snow and I transferred my weight to it as you do when you walk, it was just then that I heard a spintering sound and my right leg disappeared upto the knee into the snow through the board and the hole beneath...luckily me left leg prevented any family jewel crushing action and after giving myself a moment to ensure I wasn't caught or injured I managed to recover. One explorer life used up good and proper...

The site itself closed somewhere around 2009 but it certainly dates back beyond that, with plenty of clues to its real age, A cigerette machine that took Deutsche Marcs, a roundhouse and even a sauna. Anyway on with the photo's

Ahhh Berlin.. excellent stuff.. It seems very odd to see a site like this that hasn't become a canvas to the locals. The water tank still looks to be in good condition, and with the rope insulation as well. It's all a bit like a tour through a Faller catalogue!

If you have time for one last shopping trip and a few euros birning a hole in your pocket, get the U2 to Sophie-Charlotte-Platz and check out Foto Ackman (http://g.co/maps/m3rdq). From memory, it's also an interesting u-bahn station with a very timeless feel. And round the corner in Witzlebenplatz is an old Court of Appeal (built 1910), which had a bit of a dark history during the war as a Military Court responsible for sentancing members of the German resistance (there's a museum of the German resisitance movement in the Mitte district by the Landwehrkanal, if you can manage to find it - it's really tucked away and not many people know about it) and taken over by the occupying powers in 1945 (I think by the British army if my source is correct). It's now some very smart apartments, with some very nice original wooden panelling retained inside.

There's me rambling again.. ..
