Visited with Mistericeman and Co. I've not been able to find much history on the place but it was originally owned by Henry Heys & Co. Ltd. who owned other quarries and brickworks in Rossendale.
It was something of a comedy access. We were confronted by a bloke on a motorbike, who seemed to be some kind of off-road site marshall. He said it was private property and wondered what we were doing on the off road site. One of our group produced a map and said that we were on a public footpath and that we were just going for a walk. He didn't seem to argue with that so as soon as he turned his back we were over the fence and sliding on our arses down a steep slope into the mine, laughing our heads off.
I've been in some dodgy mines but nowt so flaky as this. One of our group had done a recce the week before and pointed out bloody big lumps of the roof that had come down since then! After less than 40 yards I was thinking "fuck this" and was going to turn around and get out but things got slightly better further in so we spent a couple of hours mooching. I wasn't using my own camera so excuse the crapness of the pics.
