From a visit with RB earlier on in the year.
The Newlands site has been occupied as far back as the Bronze Age and is also believed to have been the site of a Roman Camp. The estate in it's present form was established in 1213 by King John and belonged to a community of Knights Templar up until 1256 when it was transferred to the Knight Hospitallers. The property was dissolved by King Henry VIII in 1544 and bestowed upon himself before selling it in 1546. The estate changed hands a few more times and Newland Hall was built around 1740.

By 1917, the hall was thought to be in a poor state and demolished by the owners.
The buildings that still stand are a ramshackle bunch of farmbuildings and additions to the halls outbuildings. The old stable block is pretty imposing and impressive.
One of the houses was lived in up until the 1960s by the 'pigwoman' - the house was next to a pig enclosure hidden under the fields, used to avoid living on rations during World War 2. A bit genius really, as the pig enclosure was completely hidden and undetected by inspectors making regular visits to the estate.
