Brief bit of borrowed history

Built in response to the threat of invasion by Napoleon, Hudson’s bastion was constructed on the eastern side of Dover Castle to improve its defences. It is linked to the castle via Hudson’s Passage. The bastion was designed to provide flanking fire from its numerous firing slits. The caponier projecting from the bastion into the ditch would have provided even more fire power for the defenders.

Tonight was me mates birthday so as a treat for an explore..Myself Space invader(birthday boy) Obscurity and fortknox0 went up the castle..what a night it was ..

Few slightly hurried pics from the evening

Looks like it'd be quite a size of a place in there; atmospheric shots captured well.

This is yet another prime example of English heritage leaving good stuff to deteriorate while they use their funding on ..well crap..!its a shame mate opening this up to the public would serve there interest better !

How much can they realistically keep open? and manned? and maintained?

Are there really enough people prepared to pay enough to maintain it and repair visitor-related wear-and-tear? You can already see that the paintwork requries stabilisation, and given the age of the structure the potential range of compounds used in the paint is going to be "interesting", as they say.

Yeah i see your point..recently they spent £250,000 to fix up and open spur caponier..as i found when i went up to look about getting some pics..this is a little gem and has a nice gated route from the castle grounds for visitor access..just think its a shame its left to get worse
