The bridge of which the chapel is an integral part was built around 1342 (that’s older than me!) and it is thought the chapel survived only because of the bridges importance
It consists of nine arches and is 98m long
View of the east side of the bridge notice the gothic arches (pointed at top)

Now a view of the west side notice the arch is now a semicircle

Seems the bridge has been widened twice 9 foot each time in 1758 and 1797 respectively and only the base was keyed in see below and semicircular arches were added(had to take my socks off for these shots

Masons marks are visible everywhere

Found an old drawing on the net and shamelessly stole it

Tried to capture the shot today

Using photobuckets tools made the same modern shot look old

At the north end of the bridge is a packhorse bridge

Nice write up mate. Been meaning to do this for ages!

I'm sure there's some history somewhere about the face of the chapel being sold and the chapel refaced.

Think there's an older illustration of the rear of the chapel stepping down further too. Could be wrong though, it's been a while since I did a bit of readin on it.

Cheers for sharing.

The eastern fascia of the chapel is in the grounds of Kettlethorpe Hall, but was constantly getting vandalised. I'm not entirely sure how much of it is left.
Rutland & Phoenix Mills over the road, i've tried numerous times and even spoke with the project manager from CTP but to no avail. It's very doable now the scaff has gone up. Fuck all inside though and totally stripped.

some lead theiving pikeys caused damage to the roof stonework the other year which had to be repaired.

I've driven past this place loads and always wondered what the story was behind it. Is it ever open?

It is yeah, i'm part of the Friends Of Chantry Chapel whose head is author and Wakefield Historian Kate Taylor. She's published several books about it.
