Strathmartine Hospital - June 2011

After ending up in the wilds of Scotland for work, and needing to stop over for the night,
I ended up finding about this place a few miles away from where I was staying.

Baldovan Institution was founded in 1852, mainly through the benevolence of Sir John and Lady Jane Ogilvy
and from voluntary contributions and fees. It was established on the north bank of the Dighty as an orphanage,
hospital and place of education and training for ‘imbecile’ children, accomodating 30 children.
As such it was the first hospital of its kind in Scotland and the second in Britain.
The Orphanage opened on 30th November 1854 and the Asylum opened on 6th January 1855.

Most of the buildings were sealed on the ground floor, but were accessible on the higher levels (climbing required)
But seeing as this was a solo explore, I wasn't really up for it, seeing as the place was in the middle of nowhere.
So there's only a few internal shots.

Found quite an interesting history on the place here:

It was quite a large site, I wasn't expecting it to be so big, and I spend almost 3 hours wandering around the grounds.

This looked like an air raid siren!

After walking around the grounds for a bit, 3 small deer jumped out in front of me, so I caught one on camera.

The site was quite a large one, you can see the boiler house chimney in the distance.

This is the main building of the hospital

Some of the Internals looked in quite good condition in some of the buildings.

This must have been the childrens ward.

After a Kestrel or something was flying over my head,
I began to think this was turning into a nature shoot rather than an urbex shoot.
