Draperstown post is famous as 'The post that the IRA attacked'. In 1986 the IRA dropped a firebomb down the FSM pipe and burnt most of the inside of the post, although not a total loss, 31 ROC HQ decided to abandon the post and reopen the post at Castledawson in its place.

The post still had all its equipment inside (including the BPI, GZI, Carrier Receiver, FSM Dome) and although it was a bit smoke damaged it was all in one piece, most of this equipment was still inside the post right up until 2001 when Nick Catford visited, then it strangley vanished! The GZI recently turned up in Scotland on a restored post, I don't think I need to say who the owner had bought it from. Draperstown cost £1,423 to build in 1959.

The remains of the Orlit can be seen behind the entrance shaft.

Sadly the handle is broken off.

Thats the third one I have seen in a post over here, Portadown had one in the cupboard that was in perfect condition which was a stroke of luck!

Have you seen that Uzi box on eBay ATM?

I take it you mean GZI box not UZI!

Yeah I have seen it, thats the delivery case though and not the storage case, all posts had a storage case that they kept the GZI in when it was below ground (well most of them did). I do have one, it looks like this....

This post has always been interesting one, certainly strange how all the gear went after Catford's visit.....

shame to see it al burnt like that, can never understand the mentality of someone starting fires in these knowing your gonna have to climb out while its burning

Kids didn't burn this out, I take it you didn't bother reading the history bit at the top?

How do you think Catford pays for his jolly's? Certainly not for his TV presenting abilities thats for sure!
