I missed an oppurtunity to get into this site many years ago and kicked myself ever since. When I found it open again I made sure I got in there, I wasn't going to make the same mistake twice. It isn't the most exciting place, but I was just pleased to be able to see it. This is one that is literally on my doorstep!
History
Redmaynes was hugely successful during the post-war period, with work being transported worldwide. The business started by Samuel Redmayne in 1868 as a tailoring firm, but over the years it expanded into other fields.
At the height of production, the workforce turned out 7,000 plastic raincoats a week. Contract work was carried out for firms including the John Lewis chain and Harrods, while protective clothing was made for employees at Calder Hall's Atomic Energy Commission.
However the factory, which was the first on the industrial estate, finally closed in 1993 with the loss of 48 jobs.
