The Carmel of Chichester dates back to 1678. In penal times, girls who wished to follow a religious vocation were obliged to leave their native England and live in exile on the Continent.

The Carmelite nuns lived in this convent in Hunston, just outside Chichester in West Sussex up until 1994. In 2009 the front section of the convent caught fire, the exact cause of which has never been determined, but arson was never ruled out. The convent now stands derelict on the Selsey road.

Sadly, the only part of the convent we could gain access to was the parts which caught on fire. The rest is firmly secured, many windows with cemented breeze blocks and others with boarding, real shame, as I would love to have seen what was inside the parts still standing!!
