Brackenhill derelict quarry and mine, Aprill 2011

Hi All! first post, my daughter, KelseyRebecca98 has done quite a few. Found this just down the road, fantastic explore with loads of old machinary, explosive bunkers and more. Located in Ackworth, west york's, been closed quite a while though there is a small unit still making gravestones there. Bit of info-

Once covered in bracken, quarrying began
here over 360 years ago in 1629 when
Charles I granted quarrying rights to tenants
to take stone for use within the Manor.
However, this hard course-grained sandstone
(known locally as Ackworth Rock) was not
only good building material but could be used
for grindstones and scythe stones and by the
1800’s it was exported worldwide. Many of
the houses you pass are built from rock from
this quarry (including Nostell Priory, on the
horizon). A silica carbonide substitute
(carborundum) has replaced the rock in
recent years. However, stone from
Brackenhill is still used in the restoration of
churches.

Just had a nose at this place yesterday, it turns out it's no abandoned, however the man who owns it was very polite and let us have a look round, I also got some interesting info from him. I am putting up a post once I've got my pics sorted. Thanks for putting this up, without it we would of never come across it.

Found this & your daughters report from this place on Monday so as Im local I headed over that night for some pics with my dad (a big fan of the Euclid truck!). Was a bit too dark by the time we got there but had a first try at night time photography. Just wanted to say great pics & thanks for posting!

Thanks, took several photos but only a few once the moon came out before my camera battery died. Was caught out by how quickly it gets dark on an evening now but it gave me a first attempt to try abit of night time photography. Will do a trip back with torches etc & have a bit more of a play. Thanks again for your original report!
