We were probably 12 months too late with this place. The fire in March last year (read all about here (http://www.thisisstaffordshire.co.uk/news/Inquiry-blaze-drama/article-1891364-detail/article.html)) destroyed what was left of, by the looks of it, a jolly nice explore. Today she stands not much more than a ruin, in fact she is a ruin and I'm not sure how she's still standing.
The asylum was designed by Josepth Potter and opened in 1818. In the 1950s it became St George's Hospital and finally closed its doors in 1995.
In June plans for developing the site were submitted and there is now evidence of Bovis starting work on the site although not on the main building. If you look here (http://www.expressandstar.com/news/2010/06/16/4m-st-georges-hospital-scheme-unveiled/) more will be explained. I'm sure you'll agree that the picture on that article looks feck all like the building we all know.

And this is what she looks like today, coughs errrrm, it was lashing it down and I really couldn’t be bothered walking all the way round to the front of the building to take a picture through the palisade fence so this is as good as you're going to get...
