Due to Freebird's operation on her feet recently, exploring has taken a temporary holiday :( however this has given us time to catch up on some of our older explores that we'd not had time to sort to date! :thumb So here's a couple of these, Barnsdale & Cadeby tunnels, a few months late so apologies. Noticing Nij's recent post Barnsdale now has gates/fences either end!

Barnsdale Tunnel Was part of the Hull & Barnsley Railway (H&B) line. It is 1,226 yards long, dead straight, open at both ends with both portals accessible. The tunnel was opened in 1885 & closed to passenger traffic in 1932 then completely in 1959.

The Hull & Barnsley’s westbound traffic emerged from Barnsdale’s 1,226 yard tunnel into a sheer-sided limestone cutting before arriving at Wrangbrook Junction, diverging point for the Wath and Denaby branches. The north-eastern portal is to be found in a wood adjoining the A1’s Barnsdale Bar services.
We originally didn't find the north-east portal & instead followed the line of the tunnel above ground. We saw a couple of the capped off airshafts. Then we entered the tunnel from the south-west portal. The cutting leading to this portal was extremely steep & impossible to tranverse either up or down.
We found the three airshafts from inside & lightpainting fun was had!

CADEBY

The tunnel was opened in the mid 1890s as part of a branch line for the Hull and Barnsley railway. By 1903 this 164 yard tunnel was closed to passengers and was finally closed to all trains in 1964, having served Denaby Colliery, and probably the nearby Cadeby Colliery (which became the Earth Centre).

Above ground the distance to the furthest portal from the A1 seemed like a HUGE hike! I can't believe that we missed the nearest portal. Here are my Barnsdale Tunnel pics from that day followed by a few from the tiny Cadeby Tunnel.
