12th century abbey of the Cistercian Order.
Disestablished during the Dissolution of the Monasteries by that rather rotund fella

I likes it. It is mad that the main road used to run straight through the nave. Lots of good places for highwaymen to hide I would think :thumb

It was dissolved on 22 November 1539, (Henry VIII to blame) and much of the stone was used for other buildings nearby, including the steps leading to Leeds bridge (at the botton of Briggate). A lot of the tower remained intact until a torrential storm in 1779.
It has done very well as a ruin. Lots of artists came to paint it, including JMW Turner (below) who painted this in 1824
