I was having a suit fitting this weekend for me mates wedding which put pay to any real exploring. So after telling the woman in the shop that her tape measure was quite clearly broken I trundled up Holcombe Hill to have a look and a climb of Peel Tower (or monument depending on where you look).

Unfortunately it wasn't open. There are no set times of operation, when they can be arsed they raise a flag to indicate you can go in. Still, as you'll see in a minute I didn't need the extra 128 feet as the views were pretty good anyway.

The tower was opened in 1852 as a memorial to Sir Robert Peel. Old Peely is the 2nd most famous thing to come out of Bury just behind black pudding and slightly ahead of Chris Brass's own goal (see here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1csQG0ZciFQ). He actually broke his nose doing that the massive weapon). He was the Prime Minister twice (Peel not Brass) and invented the police. He's why they're called 'The Filth'. Or more accurately 'Bobbies'. He also abolished the corn laws which meant cheaper bread for everyone. He died in 1850 after a horse riding accident. The tower cost £1,000 to build and was paid for by public subscriptions.

A couple of pics...

If you look closely you can see the steam from a train on the East Lancs Railway...
